Teen sex not always bad for school performance

Worry about your teenageers having sex? Well, at least a latest report stated, teenagers in committed relationships do no better or worse in school than those who don't have sex. However, for those who "hook up, " researchers found them get lower grades and have more school-related problems compred with those who abstain.

The report was presented by American Sociological Association in Atlanta. In a federal survey released this summer, last year nearly 50% of high school students reported having sexual intercourse, and 14% have had 4 or more partners.

Other findings:
* in term of grade-point average, teens in serious relationships did not differ from their abstinent counterparts. They were also not more likely to have problems in schoo, be suspended or absent.
* compared with virgins, teens who have casual sex had lower GPAs, cared less about school and experienced more problems in school.
* teen who have sex-whether it's a serious or casual relationship - were at higher risk of being truant and dropping out compared with teens whodon't have sex.
