The wonderful people at PALS for Health organized our continuing education seminar in Temple City this morning. Since it wasn't too far from my place and I would like to ride my bike to practice healthy lifestyle + save some gas money (and reduce CO2 emission), so I mapped out the route last night, turned out to be 20 miles.
When I took off at 8.15AM, the temperature already went up to 85'F. In fact it wasn't that bad. It took me about 50 minutes to get to the Live Oak Park community center (what a nice facility they have).
The program was great. Started with Tai Chi exercise (good stretching for me after a 12-mile ride), followed by Healthcare Reform presentation by guest speaker Toni Vargas from HCC. I'm working on a series of articles about healthcare reform, so this presentation was an icing to the cake for the studies that I've been doing lately. Toni also talked about advance directives and POLST (will explain this in different post) - there were VERY informative!
The seminar ended with fun and wonderful Zumba exercise (kind of like aerobic, but they used Mexican music). It certainly was an appetite stimulator!
PALS gals always know how to treat use with good food! The bbq/tacos at the park was great, although the outdoor temperature around 100+'F wasn't nice at all.
I used a different route to go back and at 2PM, my bike computer said outdoor temperature was 115'F (+/-10'F, so it was at least 105'F). I wasn't sure it was the grilled jalapeno I had or the heat wave was really bad, I felt like my whole body was on fire. The last 8+ miles to home was really difficult. I'm glad I made it home safely. It's NOT recommended to ride or have outdoor activity under this kind of weather. Lesson learned!
