Heavy workload can be life shortening, in Japan the phenomenon is called "Karoshi" - death caused by overwork. According to a news report I read on abc news, there are 7 ways your job could put you at risk:
1. Distracted driving: taking the office on the road (solution: put down your phone/blackberry when you're on the road, work can wait.)
2. Sitting still: when work's got you chained to the desk (solution: make sure you build into your daily schedule opportunities to get up from your desk and walk around.)
3. Work is hell: when you have a bad boss or hostile workplace (solution: do what you can to change the work culture in your office.)
4. Wide awake: when work disrupts your sleep (solution: when possible, leave work at the office; try not to let your work life bleed into the late hours of the night.)
5. Walking papers: getting laid off or fired (solution: It's not easy to recover after losing your job, but health experts say the effects of such a tribulation can be mitigated by smart behavior.)
6. Burning the midnight oil: working overtime or working late (solution: Given the current economic climate, it may be hard for many U.S. workers to say "no thanks" to overtime for the sake of their health. Still, it may be in your best interest to explore ways to exercise more control over your schedule, such as flex time.)

避免職場上的七種「致命傷」
雖然說經濟不景氣,大家為保住飯碗而努力工作,但是也千萬要記得不要「操勞死」,這樣再努力賺到的錢,也無法享用,人生根本就毫無意義了。在網上看到一篇有關預防七種職場致命傷的文章,簡略翻譯和大家分享。
1. 駕駛的誘惑─智慧型手機讓大家變成工作奴,就像是背著辦公室滿街跑,隨時隨地都要檢查是否有新的訊息或指示。開車時收發電郵或簡訊,是相當危險的事,根據美國高速公路交通安全管理署的報告,在2008年有至少5870人因為駕駛時分心而走上黃泉,2002至2007年期間,因傳簡訊造成的車禍奪走1萬6000人命。(解決方法:專心開車,勿用手機,不管公務有多重要,總不比自己的生命重要吧?)
2.久坐的危害─長久以來,醫學界已經忠告大家,長時間坐在沙發上,且食物隨手可得,可能導致心臟病及糖尿病。美國防癌協會今年公布的最新報告,進一步警告說,如果一天坐著超過六小時,有助提高死亡率,不管當事人是否有吸煙或超重。所以說,長坐在辦公室、眼睛盯著電腦、耳朵貼著電話的人,即使在平常有運動,其死亡率也是會提高的。(解決方法:確保每天安排時間離開工作檯,千萬不要坐在位子上用餐。)
3.地獄式的工作─不管有一位魔鬼般的上司或是把你當人質般扣押的公司,都會造成肢體與精神上的折磨,甚至導致更短命。(解決方法:改變及建立辦公室裡的工作文化,和同事之間建立良好的互動。可以向人事部提出改變不合理的工作環境,最壞的打算就是另謀高就。)
4.睡眠深受影響─不管什麼理由造成的失眠,人體健康必定受損。每晚少於六小時的睡眠會增加死亡的機率。(解決方法:盡量不要把工作帶回家,減少熬夜的比例,如果因為壓力而失眠,應及早尋求醫生的幫助。)
5.失業的傷害─因為失業而造成短命,是有醫學研究去佐證的,例如一個40歲的工廠工人如果被解僱,其壽命可能被減1年半。和離婚及失去至親一樣,失業的殺傷力不容忽視。(解決方法:要調整好失業的心態並不容易,但是專家建議利用這個時間去作人體的充電,照顧好自己的身心意,才開始再次出發。)
6.消耗個人能量─每天工作10-11小時者,患上心臟病及早死的機率,要比正常工作7-8小時者來得高60%。(解決方法:雖然目前這種經濟情況下,很難向加班費說不,但是一切要量力而為,以自己的健康為主,可以建議以靈活上班去取代加班。)
7.高風險的職場─確保自家公司遵循政府對職場安全的要求,違規是導致職場死亡的首號殺手。例如你的工作需要戴口罩或手套,一定要照辦,以免吸入過多有毒物。(解決方法:如果發現職場止安全,可以向政府作出舉報,只有安全的環境才能讓人安心工作。)
