Go for Kuo

Hong-Chih Kuo bobblehead
50,000 Taiwanese pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo's bobbleheads will be given away on June 14 when the Dodgers is hosting Cincinnati Reds.

As part of the renewal partnership with the Taiwan Tourism Bureau for the 2011 season, Dodgers will highlight Hong-Chih Kuo bobblehead promotion on June 14, follow by Taiwan Community Night on August 13.

The bobblehead was unveiled at Dodgers Stadium yesterday by Dodgers Chief Revenue Officer Michael Young and Taiwan Tourism Bureau Director Trust Lin. They were joined by third base coach Tim Wallach, pitcher Kenley Jansen and third baseman Russell Mitchell.

Jansen, Mitchell and Wallach were among the members of the team when the Dodgers made a historic trip to Taiwan for a series against the Chinese Professional League (CPBL) last year. They were amazed by delicious Taiwanese food at night markets and the landmark skyscraper - Taipei 101.

Dodgers was awarded the Taiwan Tourism Award presented by Wu Den-Yih, the Taiwanese Premier. In return, the tourism bureau was gifted with a number 100 Dodgers jersey, to commemorate Taiwan's 100th anniversary.

organizers and beneficiaries
Having fun and raising fund at the same time, what is the better deal? Cathay Bank kicks off its 35th annual charity golf tournament today. While most people are affected by the economy downturn, organizer urges golf lovers to sign up for the tournament, scheduled for May 11th at the Industry Hill Golf Club in City of Industry.

Proceeds from the golf tournament will be donated to six non-profit organizations in the southland that service local communities, most of them are from low-income and immigrant families. "Despite the tough economy challenge, Cathay Bank continues its mission to give back to the community," said Peter Wu, COO of Cathay Bank.

According to tournament committee chairman Tony Tang, the previous years events raised over $100,000 and they hope this year will have the same success. The six beneficiaries are Asian American Senior Citizens Service Center, Friends of the Chinatown Library, International Institute of Los Angeles, Irvine Chinese School and South Coast Chinese Cultural Association, Pacific Clinics, and Taiwanese American Heritage Week. Representatives from each organization were at the press conference too.

The registration fee for the golf tournament is $200, which include lunch, dinner and gifts. Winner of "hole in one" will receive a $10,000 prize. To register, call 1-866-228-4298.

No Perfect 10

National Cherry Blossom Festival 08 at Washington DC
It was to be the 10th Anniversary of the Cherry Blossom Festival of Southern California, however there will not be a perfect ten, as organizer announced today on its website the 2011 festival scheduled for this weekend in Little Tokyo has been postponed to September.

The reason of cancellation is unknown but festival co-founder Wendy Fujihara Anderson said unforeseen circumstances led to the decision Tuesday to reschedule the event for sometime in September (TBA). Letter was sent to event vendors as well, citing "the financial support we were promised and counting on did not materialize due to circumstance beyond our control, including the disaster in Japan."

While postponing the highly anticipated festival, organizer also announced on its website that there will be a Cherry Blossom Fundraiser and Japan Rebuild with 10,000 cranes in May.

I've covered the festival a few times, back in the early days when it was being held in Pasadena. In 2007, the festival moved to Little Tokyo. It was reported last year's event was attended by over 60,000 visitors.

Congratulation Belinda

Belinda Cheng and her
Congressional Award bronze medal
Belinda Cheng, a senior at Mark Keppel High School, received her Congressional Award bronze medal from Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Calif) and shared the joy with her beloved mother.

The charming youth believed her three-year voluntarily work at Simply Savant, a non-profit organization that promote academic excellence by helping underprivileged children acquire the ability and the means to appreciate learning, has lead to her honored. She's also a school team tennis player. "You don't know your limit until you try, you can achieve your dream and make it a reality," said Cheng.

Cheng planned an east coast adventure trip with her cousin and visited Boston, New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey last summer. "I like New York City a lot, it is such an energetic metropolitan," she added. Although she has not decided to attend which college, Cheng said she would like to major in business and finance.

The Congressional Award is a public private partnership created by Congress to promote and recognize achievement, initiative and service in America's youth, ages 14 to 23.To earn a Congressional Award, participants set and achieve individual goals in four program areas: voluntary public service, physical fitness, personal development, and expedition/exploration. Each year, roughly 1000 bronze medals, 400 silver medals and 250 gold medals are awarded. Participants in California have contributed over 325,000 hours of service in communities across the state.

Give Love, Donate Life

Charles Gau
"As I look back, even though he is gone, the fact that his organs are continuing to help someone else live a good life makes it feel that he is not really gone. Instead, part of him is still alive, still here with me and my family on earth," said Charles Gau, father of an organ donor.

The 73-year-old Gau said, "from my experience, I want people to know that death does not mean an end to life. Organ donation can help your family establish a legacy of the loved one who is no longer around. What is important is for people to understand what it means to be a donor and how comforting it has been to my family to know that we made a gift of love on his behalf."

In 2002, Gau's only son, Ardy, died unexpectedly, he was 32. During their difficult time of emotional turmoil, the Charles and his wife Lily Gaus agreed to donate Ardy’s organs, a liver and two kidneys, and saved three lives. Tzu Chi was there to help with emotional and spiritual support.

The Gau's story didn't end there. Charles' 70-year-old younger brother, who was diagnosed with hepetitis B and later developed into cirrhosis, needed a liver transplant. He was put on the recipient waiting list. Fortunately, he found his matching donor in a month and now he's living a healthy life in Atlanta, GA. "I believe in karma, this is the best reward I get since donating my son's organs," said Gau.

With a common goal of saving lives through organ, eye and tissue donation, the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO), which represents all 58 federally-designated organ recovery agencies in the U.S., signed an agreement with a highly respected, international Buddhist charitable organization, Tzu Chi Medical Foundation today, to strengthen the existing relationship between OPOs and 80 Tzu Chi offices nationwide.

William Keh 葛濟捨 signing the MOU
This is the first agreement of its kind in the organ recovery arena between a major international relief group and American organ recovery agencies. Under the agreement, AOPO and its members, may provide informational and educational resources on organ, eye and tissue donation education to the Tzu Chi leadership and its community members; help train key leaders and members about donation; and incorporate Tzu Chi in donor registry programs to increase Asian and Buddhist registration rates. Tzu Chi, will provide education training to their members to promote donor registration in the United States; as well as provide support to donor families in hospitals with culturally appropriate services.

Tzu Chi, considered the largest non-governmental agency in the Chinese community, has worked with OneLegacy, the organ and tissue recovery agency serving the seven counties around Los Angeles, to offer community volunteer training and providing charity, medical assistance and grief support to those in need, regardless of race or religion. "The cultural and language support given by the Tzu Chi community to Buddhist and Chinese-speaking families has been invaluable," said Tom Mone, CEO and vice president of OneLegacy.

Melissa Choi
"Organ donation is one of the greatest acts of compassion, the ultimate final act for an individual at the end of one's life," said Debra Boudreaux, CEO of the Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, quoting the Master Cheng Yen's teaching. "We only have the right to use our lives, not the right to own them. When one dies, one's body can no longer serve its purpose and is either cremated or buried. Those who agree to donation hope to pass their healthy organs on to others so they may continue to function and support the living. Through organ donation, a body that might have been buried will instead benefit and save many lives. Such acts of giving are enormously worthwhile."

Melissa Choi, daughter of full body donor, and Robert Chan, a liver trasplant recipient who just celebrated his 13th anniversary of 'new life,' were at the press conference and shared their stories.

Robert Chan

A $191 "Give"

What can you do with $191? Get yourself an iPhone? Spend it at A&F store? Bring your date out for a nice dinner? Or maybe pay for a ticket issues by the LAPD? Yes, if you jay-walked and get caught, your fund for the iPhone, shirt or date could end up in the city account.

According to LA Times article, LAPD started the new enforcement after Thanksgiving, and if you are in downtown LA and not obeying the traffic laws, you can be the next person going home with the $191 jay-walking ticket. Police said it was about accident and crime prevention. Last year 3 people were hit by car during the year-end holiday season, 2 of them were blamed on the pedestrians. Besides that, thieves/robbers tend to run across the street to target their victims, according to LAPD.

Punishing jay-walkers is important, they're not only risking their own life, but also other commuters, but at a price-tag of $191? I think that's ridiculous! LAPD should increase enforcement in reducing crimes.

Supermarket comes to Chinatown?

Rio Ranch Market aims to open in Chinatown.
There might be (finally) a supermarket in Chinatown!

Jay McCormack, CEO of Rio Ranch Market introduced his plan on opening a store in Chinatown during tonight's Chinatown Community Advisory Committee (CCAC) meeting. The potential location is at the Grand Plaza (corner of Cesar Chavez and Grand).

According to Mr. McCormack, Rio Ranch Market opened its first store in 1982 and now has 7 stores in the Inland Empire (Riverside-San Bernadino) area. Currently they've over 500 employees and their motto is Always Fresh, Always For Less. He's looking forward to bring the business into LA. The store is expected to create 150 job opportunities, of which, 120 are full time. He's also looking into the possibility of operation the store for 24 hours. When the store is opened, residents of Chinatown and surrounding area are expected to enjoy fresh produces, international cuisine food stores and bakery with lower price from the store.

Grand Plaza opened in the early 1990s, it is one of the two senior apartment in Chinatown, with over 450 residents. There's a Adult Day Health Care facility onsite and a few shops. If Rio's plan is approved, it will be the first supermarket in Chinatown. Currently there are only convenient stores, liquor stores and mini-market in Chinatown. While Rio will create job for the area, the impact on local mom-and-pop stores is unknown.

CCAC members' concerns including residents' safety, parking, job for local people and cultural/language sensitivity. While there was no major objection at the meeting, the process of getting the store open and run could be complicated. Rio Ranch Market will host community meeting in the near future so community members can voice their concern and input. Stay tune for more!

Gifting a trip? You should read this...

Year end holiday season kicks off early this year when Black Friday is no longer limited to the day after Thanksgiving. While i-Phone, i-Pod and i-Pad might be the most popular items on the wish list, some people are looking for something different. If you're planning to gift someone with a free trip, here are some useful information:
  • give airline gift card instead of buying an actual ticket (make sure it's an airline that serves the airport the receiver will be flying out of)
  • if he/she has frequent-flier account, consider buying miles for him/her
  • make sure the gift card does not have expiration date
  • gift card from American Express is a good choice, which can be used for travel on various airlines
  • if you're buying actual ticket, book fast, fares are expected to be 17% higher this year
