AIDS/LifeCycle

"Healthy" foods that make you fat?!

web photo
Are you eating "healthy" foods? Well, maybe they're not that healthy after all - check out what the expert has to say:

  1. Pretzels - offer barely any nutritional benefits, overdose of salt. take popcorn instead (no the creamy cheese butter one, of course)
  2. Splenda - research suggests that artificial sweeteners lead to weight gain, also can cause damage to beneficial bacteria in the gut. take real honey
  3. High-fiber cereals with sugar. substitute with Kashi Go Lean
  4. Diet soda - bad for your waistline and can be damaging to your health. sip seltzer with slices fruit
  5. Frozen yogurt - contain nearly the same amount of fat and calories as ice cream, so, get a real ice cream once in a while
  6. veggie chips - most of the chips are high in fat, calories and sodium. make your own veggie chips at home, try chopping kale and tossing it with a small amount of olive oil and sea salt, pop it in the oven and bake until crispy

Give Love, Donate Life

Charles Gau
"As I look back, even though he is gone, the fact that his organs are continuing to help someone else live a good life makes it feel that he is not really gone. Instead, part of him is still alive, still here with me and my family on earth," said Charles Gau, father of an organ donor.

The 73-year-old Gau said, "from my experience, I want people to know that death does not mean an end to life. Organ donation can help your family establish a legacy of the loved one who is no longer around. What is important is for people to understand what it means to be a donor and how comforting it has been to my family to know that we made a gift of love on his behalf."

In 2002, Gau's only son, Ardy, died unexpectedly, he was 32. During their difficult time of emotional turmoil, the Charles and his wife Lily Gaus agreed to donate Ardy’s organs, a liver and two kidneys, and saved three lives. Tzu Chi was there to help with emotional and spiritual support.

The Gau's story didn't end there. Charles' 70-year-old younger brother, who was diagnosed with hepetitis B and later developed into cirrhosis, needed a liver transplant. He was put on the recipient waiting list. Fortunately, he found his matching donor in a month and now he's living a healthy life in Atlanta, GA. "I believe in karma, this is the best reward I get since donating my son's organs," said Gau.

With a common goal of saving lives through organ, eye and tissue donation, the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO), which represents all 58 federally-designated organ recovery agencies in the U.S., signed an agreement with a highly respected, international Buddhist charitable organization, Tzu Chi Medical Foundation today, to strengthen the existing relationship between OPOs and 80 Tzu Chi offices nationwide.

William Keh 葛濟捨 signing the MOU
This is the first agreement of its kind in the organ recovery arena between a major international relief group and American organ recovery agencies. Under the agreement, AOPO and its members, may provide informational and educational resources on organ, eye and tissue donation education to the Tzu Chi leadership and its community members; help train key leaders and members about donation; and incorporate Tzu Chi in donor registry programs to increase Asian and Buddhist registration rates. Tzu Chi, will provide education training to their members to promote donor registration in the United States; as well as provide support to donor families in hospitals with culturally appropriate services.

Tzu Chi, considered the largest non-governmental agency in the Chinese community, has worked with OneLegacy, the organ and tissue recovery agency serving the seven counties around Los Angeles, to offer community volunteer training and providing charity, medical assistance and grief support to those in need, regardless of race or religion. "The cultural and language support given by the Tzu Chi community to Buddhist and Chinese-speaking families has been invaluable," said Tom Mone, CEO and vice president of OneLegacy.

Melissa Choi
"Organ donation is one of the greatest acts of compassion, the ultimate final act for an individual at the end of one's life," said Debra Boudreaux, CEO of the Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, quoting the Master Cheng Yen's teaching. "We only have the right to use our lives, not the right to own them. When one dies, one's body can no longer serve its purpose and is either cremated or buried. Those who agree to donation hope to pass their healthy organs on to others so they may continue to function and support the living. Through organ donation, a body that might have been buried will instead benefit and save many lives. Such acts of giving are enormously worthwhile."

Melissa Choi, daughter of full body donor, and Robert Chan, a liver trasplant recipient who just celebrated his 13th anniversary of 'new life,' were at the press conference and shared their stories.

Robert Chan

2011 - New career opportunities for medical interpreters

web photo
The demand for medical interpreters is expected to increase even more when new standards go into effect on January 1, 2011 requiring healthcare organizations to provide an interpreter to patients who speak limited English.

Federal laws have been on the books for years requiring medical institutions to provide interpreters to non-native speakers, but there has been little enforcement of the provisions until recently. Now the Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies more than 18,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States, is establishing new standards effective in January requiring hospitals to provide language interpreting and translation services.

The new provisions are expected to further fuel the demand for medical interpreters, which were already in short supply. Even before the new standards were introduced, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted jobs for interpreters and translators would grow by 22 percent over the next decade, faster than the average for all other occupations. Meanwhile a nationwide survey of 4,700 doctors, conducted by the nonprofit Center for Studying Health System Change, found that only 55.8 percent of practices with non-English speaking patients provide interpreting services, and 40 percent offer patient-education materials in languages other than English.

Medicaid currently reimburses the medical provider for the services of an interpreter. Depending on the state, a medical interpreter can make $25 to $50 an hour. In the private sector, they can command upwards of $100 an hour.
In order to be effective, medical interpreters must not only be fluent in a second language but also know a great deal of medical terminology, have good memory recall, understand ethics and cultural sensitivities, and be accurate and precise in interpreting and translating medical information. They also cannot omit or filter information exchanged between a doctor and a patient.

Beginning in 2011, Wake Forest University will offer a new MA in Interpreting and Translation Studies with three tracks, including the Intercultural Services in Healthcare option -- the first such specialization in the United States -- which prepares graduates for managerial careers in areas of culture-sensitive healthcare delivery. Another track, Teaching of Interpreting, will be the only one in the Northern hemisphere educating faculty for college-level interpreting programs.

Great food for anti-prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in American men. While screening and early diagnosis are important, prevention can be done through the right foods.

Here are some of the "anti-prostate cancer" foods:
  1. Tomatoes - add heat and fat whenever possible, the more processed the tomatoes and the longer you cook them, the more lycopene is released. Lycopene is an antioxidant compound and one of the most widely studied anti-cancer agents.
  2. Broccoli - try to mix things up each time you dine, raw, steamed, boiled or even pair with other anti-prostate cancer foods such as tomatoes to enhance the effects. The sulforaphane might act as an antioxidant itself or it may boost detoxifying enzymes in the body.
  3. Soy - opt for soy products instead of meats and dairy from time to time, such as soy milk, tofu and protein powder. The effects of soy are thought to be due to isoflavones, or the so called "plant estrogens."
  4. Flax - known for its versatility, can be found in multigrain breads, cereals, breakfast bars, muffins, flout. Flaxseed oil can be found in pure liquid form or as capsules. Besides high in omega-3, it is also rich in lignans, a class of phytoestrogen that may act as an antioxidant.

Hand Sanitizer vs. Soap and water

Wash your hands as often as you can to prevent spread of infection and illness. Do you usually use soap and water or the convenient hand sanitizer? Do you know the hand washing tips? Do you know how long hand sanitizers really work?

According to the CDC's guide on the right way to wash your hands:
When washing hands with soap and water:
    * Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap. Use warm water if it is available.
    * Rub hands together to make a lather and scrub all surfaces.
    * Continue rubbing hands for 15-20 seconds. Need a timer? Imagine singing "Happy Birthday" twice through to a friend.
    * Rinse hands well under running water.
    * Dry your hands using a paper towel or air dryer. If possible, use your paper towel to turn off the faucet.
    * Always use soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
When water and soap are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a good substitute. However, while many of us use the hand sanitizer, who really knows how long does it works? The answer is 2 minutes! Experts said it's a crucial 2 minutes, where it helps to reduce the transmission of germs that can make us sick.

Try the remedies

When I came down with cold not too long ago, my friend told me to boil some coke with slices of ginger, drink when it's hot, and guess what, I did feel better! I don't like to take medicines, especially the pills and syrup (regardless if they were prescript or over the counter). Moreover, a good friend of mine experienced life-threatening case from drug-poisoning/overdoses - so, I really want to avoid taking any western medicines.
